Act natural – how to look good on screen

Act natural – how to look good on screen

Some people seem to just naturally dazzle on screen. But most of us need to work a bit harder to find that engaging camera presence.

If that’s you, then we’re here to help.

So how can you look relaxed and professional in your videos?

The secrets are surprisingly simple…

  1. Look directly at the lens. Always try to maintain eye contact with your audience.
  2. Smile. When you smile, your body releases chemicals which will make you feel more relaxed. It has to be a proper smile though, not just a moving of the mouth.
  3. Consider your posture. Stand or sit up straight and relax your shoulders so you don’t seem rigid or hunched.
  4. Show your hands. Showing your hands helps you to build trust with your audience but if you struggle to know what to do with them, find something to hold. But don’t cross your arms as you’ll look defensive.
  5. Breathe to your belly. Belly breathing, or diaphragmatic breathing, is a well-known meditation technique to help you relax.
  6. Forget your audience. You’ve already written your script with your audience in mind so now forget about them and imagine that you’re just talking to someone you know.
  7. Talk slowly. Not so slow that you drag over your words, but talk at a steady, natural pace like you would when chatting to a friend on the phone.
  8. Prepare. Practice. Be confident. Get used to seeing yourself on camera. Plan what you’re doing, and rehearse it. Go over the script until you’re sure you can deliver it well.

And of course, the Teleprompter for Video app will help too. It’ll give you the confidence to know you’re saying the right thing at the right time – whilst ensuring you’re looking directly at the camera.
